Discovery Learning Center provides an educational, play-based curriculum to stimulate your child’s environment, enabling him or her to become an active learner. Your child has the opportunity to experiment and explore the world around them to enhance his or her individual progress.
We use the HighReach Learning Curriculum, which focuses on your child’s developmental milestones. The curriculum teaches children to learn about themselves (self-concept), their feelings (emotional), socialization (social), gross and fine motor skills (physical), and language and cognitive skills.
Children develop through different stages of emotional need. We recognize that children need to lead during play, and we provide a variety of activities to help them grow individually. These activities, along with a responsive and supportive staff, will promote each child’s enjoyment for learning.
Children at this age learn to develop trust in their caregivers by playing games that involve, for example, going away and being found. Because our curriculum ensures their emotional and physical needs are met, they build a sense of trust in themselves and their environment.
Children gain control of their large and small motor skills as they develop through activities we lead in our center. Development of these skills enables children to strengthen eye-hand coordination, which is one of the key foundations for moving and doing.
Toddlers construct their learning by using their senses. During this stage, children learn how to use toys to gain an understanding of cause and effect. Toddlers actively explore their surroundings, and we are committed to providing activities that increase cognitive development.
Here at Discovery Learning Center we encourage imaginative play to develop the use of language and social interaction. We also encourage participation in art, allowing a child to be expressive, creative, and to build a sense of personal accomplishment.

The creative curriculum we teach focuses on your child’s development in four areas: social/emotional, cognitive, language and physical. The curriculum has defined goals within each area of development. Social/ emotional development is learning to trust. Children build confidence to develop their independence and feel a sense of pride. Social/emotional development occurs through the areas of independence and socializing.
Children enjoy building friendships through group activities, and they also like doing things alone. At this time, Jr. Kindergarteners are beginning to attend to their own personal needs, and are learning how to be polite and tactful.
Children are learning to understand and classify objects, typically sorting them one characteristic at a time. Jr. Kindergarten children are intrigued by the cause and effect of why things happen the way they do. They are curious and imaginative as they learn to separate reality from fantasy. Four- and five-year-old learn concepts through discovery and experimentation. They begin to problem solve and to make predictions by looking at the things around them and drawing from what they already know. They understand how the same object can have two features or concepts.
Children are beginning to talk in sentences and to express needs, ask questions, and recite simple rhymes. They will participate in conversations and share their thoughts. Children understand action words, and they like to communicate, often using big words to describe their actions. They are learning to apply their communication skills through reading and writing.
Children in this age group enjoy gross motor activities that involve outdoor play, and they look forward to quiet time, too. They are learning to control their muscles, which helps them to move quickly about during outdoor play. Most preschoolers have begun to build fine motor coordination with increasing control. During this age children have more control with scissors, paint brushes and pencils when learning how to write letters and their names.
Discovery Learning Center understands that each child develops differently and through different planned activities. We observe children and continually change our classroom environment to meet the needs of all of our students.
Our before- and after- school program offers the school-age child a welcomed break from structured academic learning environment through a variety of activity zones that further enhance his or her creativity, and problem-solving and decision-making skills. In our fun, productive and supervised environment, each child also has the opportunity to develop special friendships.
By meeting with parents, our teachers can determine what each child requires after school. Perhaps an older child needs more help in order to complete homework assignments, or a younger child may need special tutoring in reading or math. This also is a good time to let the children learn more about computers, which are available at the center. Yet our teachers know that after a busy day at school, children need time to play. Supervised playgrounds give each child the chance to direct that special energy only children have in a healthy way.
The Discovery school-age program is designed to extend your child's academic learning from the traditional classroom setting into our quality learning center. Overall, our goal is to foster a fun environment for children where they can acquire a positive self image, and develop social skills that build creativity, imagination, and self awareness as they interact through daily activities.
Discovery Learning Center provides transportation to the following elementary schools: Rosa Parks, Sonnie Penn, Martin Luther King, Christa McAuliffe, Coles and Enterprise.
We provide an unforgettable experience by providing the highest quality programs for children ages 2-1/2 through 13.
